South Azerbaijani Activists are Arrested at a Mass Scale
Reports reaching the South Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement (SANAM) Human Rights Commission depict the depth of the Iranian regime’s lack of tolerance towards peaceful human rights and ecological activists in the occupied South Azerbaijan region. Tens of South Azerbaijani activists have been arrested without probable cause and have been kept at detention facilities of the Iranian intelligence (Ettelaat) service without sentencing or due process. These activists have been deprived of their right to bail and their contact with family members has either been extremely limited or prohibited all together. Reports of physical and mental tortures are common, and the regime is simply imprisoning South Azerbaijanis based lies such as “propoganda against the Islamic regime, disturbing the public peace, and aiding foreign services in their agenda against Iran.”
SANAM strongly condemns the reckless and baseless arrests of South Azerbaijan National Movement activists by the tyrannical Iranian mullah regime and urges the international community to impose stricter measures to remind the regime in Tehran of international law, UN charter, and human rights conventions and covenants that have been signed. The Tehran mullah regime has no regard to the rights listed in its constitution such as articles 15 and 19. The South Azerbaijani Turks simply use peaceful methods such as protesting and civil disobedience to achieve their goals which are education in mother tongue, right to freedoms of speech, press, religion, and assembly, as well as the right to self-determination.
Below are names of the South Azerbaijani national activists who are currently imprisoned, and unfortunately the list continues to grow each new day. There are also those released and re-arrested on baseless accusations, and those who have finished their sentence are now facing excommunication from their hometowns and cities.
